With Youtube's recent billion-dollar acquisition, it started a video-content startup craze, although some are quite ingenious, like
BubblePLY which lets you add speech bubbles to scenes in the video, and
scenemaker which allows you to manipulate and mashup videos.
Jumpcut is another similar service.
Darejunkies.com however, seems to have tapped into something special. Essentially its another video sharing site, but its focused on people doing stupid things, which makes up a fair bit of youtube. Challenges are categorised into various different challenge types (e.g. dating, punked, food) and anyone can put one up. Along with that there's your using social networking stuff too, e.g. friends, blogs.
What I reckon is particular interesting however, is that you can win cash each month if your video's in the top 10. I read somewhere that they're considering sponsored challenges too, where an individual, a firm, an organisation can put some financial incentive into the challenges. With no shortage of people doing stupid things, a well thought out challenge could become some very effective advertising.
Its only just launched, so its still small and young, but it looks set to be the online version of funniest home videos.
